People may think chain wax is a new invention, but it isn't. It's been around since at least the 90s, that I know of. What is new is that someone did the testing to find out that chain wax as a lubricant can have less drag than oil based lubes.

Bicycle Locks

I don't like mounting anything on the bicycle unless I'm touring or going for groceries with panniers. It's partly to do with aesthetics: I prefer the clean lines of the bicycle without anything mounted on it. Also no chance of anything rattling going over uneven streets. I like having two different types of locks that I wear on my person.

Surviving NYC traffic

Rule #0. Murphy's law. Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong. Watch out for what you can't see. Look for potholes and traffic at all times. Look for ruts that your front wheel can get railroaded into (they can be hard to spot in low light).

Eggbeater / SPD / MTB Shoe Sole Wear

[Keen Commuter Sandals]

As you walk around in your cycling shoes, your soles will wear down, and there will be increasing play/looseness in the connection between pedal and cycling shoe. Also the metal cleat will scrape and wear down as it gets closer to the ground.

Enlarging Stem Clamp Diameter

[Grinding Stone Bits]
[Diamond Coated Drill Bit]
So you have 25.8mm or 26mm handlebars, and it is a big struggle trying to get them into a 25.4mm stem clamp. 26mm stem clamps are rare, or too expensive. You can use a 1“ spherical grinding stone drill bit (at least that's what I used; the white one pictured), to bore out the clamp surface to a larger diameter. There are also diamond coated spherical drill bits. Make sure the bit can easily slide into the stem, …

Market Segmentation of Bicycles

Market Segmentation in the Bicycle Industry

It seems inconceivable, to bicycle manufacturers, that I want to tour or commute with a racing bicycle, rather than buy a separate bicycle for touring.

Aside from this, there is the issue of sizing the rider to a bicycle frame.

Patching Bicycle Tubes

First and foremost, I don't recommend patching tubes, because of the likelyhood that the patch will leak. Also, I do love fixing things and not throwing things away, but I should value my time as well. It's just overall better if you have the few extra dollars to buy a new tube. If you're reading this because you haven't patched a tube before, I recommend you don't learn the art. Pick a different project!
